Canned Cocktails vs Hard Seltzers: What’s the Difference?

For the last few years, hard seltzers have been everywhere. They are light, easy to drink, and usually come in bright pastel cans lined up in every grocery store cooler. But as drinkers have started looking for more flavor and higher quality, another kind of drink has been getting more attention: canned cocktails.


At first glance, they look similar. Both come in sleek cans, both are portable, and both are ready to drink. But what is inside is very different.


What’s a Hard Seltzer?

A hard seltzer is basically sparkling water with alcohol and flavor added. The alcohol usually comes from fermented sugar, which makes it closer to a flavored beer than a true cocktail. Most hard seltzers sit around 4 to 5 percent alcohol, similar to light beer.


They are meant to be simple and refreshing, but the flavor tends to come from added “natural flavors” rather than real ingredients. The result is crisp and bubbly, but not necessarily complex or sophisticated.

What’s a Canned Cocktail?

Canned cocktails are made with real spirits, the same ones you would find in a proper bar. Vodka, gin, tequila, rum, or in our case, Mastiha, are mixed with natural juices, syrups, or botanicals, then canned for convenience.


Unlike hard seltzers, not all canned cocktails are fizzy. Some are lightly sparkled, but others, like Dosi Dosi’s Greek Mastiha Cocktail, are completely still. Ours is non-carbonated and 18% ABV, which means each can is bar strength, the equivalent of two cocktails. That is part of what sets premium canned cocktails apart. They are not trying to imitate soda. They are crafted to deliver a full cocktail experience in an easy, portable form.


The Flavor Difference

You can taste the difference right away. Hard seltzers are light and one-note, made to be refreshing but not memorable. Canned cocktails carry the full flavor of the spirit and the ingredients that go with it.


In our case, we use Mastiha, a rare Greek liqueur made from the resin of mastic trees that grow only on the island of Chios. It has a distinct herbal, pine-like aroma that gives our cocktail a flavor you won't find anywhere else. It is crisp, aromatic, and naturally smooth, something that simply does not exist in the seltzer world.


Ingredients and Quality

This is where the two categories really split. Hard seltzers are made with alcohol from fermented sugar, sparkling water, and flavor extracts.


Canned cocktails list their actual ingredients: real spirits, real fruit, and sometimes herbs or botanicals. At Dosi Dosi, we keep our recipe simple and clean, using Mastiha, fresh lemon juice, natural ingredients, and no preservatives. Everything about it is designed to taste the way a real cocktail should: balanced, fresh, and layered.


The Occasion

Hard seltzers are perfect for easy afternoons and beach coolers. They are light, casual, and don't require much thought.


Canned cocktails fit a different mood. They are for moments when you want something that feels intentional, a drink that has character and presence. Ours is meant to be sipped slowly, over ice, the same way you would enjoy a cocktail at a bar.


Why Canned Cocktails Are Growing

Drinkers are paying more attention to what's in their glass. They are looking for transparency, better ingredients, and real flavor. Canned cocktails meet that need, offering both convenience and quality.


In California and across the United States, more people are choosing premium ready-to-drink options over mass-market ones. The new wave of canned cocktails, like Dosi Dosi, shows that convenience does not have to mean compromise. You can have craftsmanship, heritage, and flavor in a can.
